Our Misssion Is To Keep Kids Off The Streets.

The mission of TAM is to encourage youth involvement in aviation as an alternative to drugs, gang violence and other self-destructive activities. The program offers elementary, middle, and high school students the opportunity to work one-on-one with qualified tutors, mentors and aviation staff five days per week. The program requires that students maintain above average grades and stay out of trouble. We have concluded that their newfound interest in aviation and relevant historical events improves their overall academic performance as well as their behavior in school. Our Mission Is To Inspire Tomorrow’s Leaders.

TAM wishes to positively influence the lives of children, by reducing the incidents of juvenile crime among at-risk youth starting in the Los Angeles area, eventually expanding nationwide; increase school performance; educate youth in the area of aviation; and prepare them to receive a pilot license. In order to make a more significant impact on urban communities, TAM has expanded its mission to include a youth training component. This program has been recognized as successful, as well as a highly reproducible, model for community development. The basic tenet is that youth will be the future caretakers of their surroundings. By involving them early on in the care of the community, they are directly connected to its future. Equally important is the knowledge that, without job skills and training, disenfranchised youth will be more susceptible to such problems as gang involvement and drug addiction.

Our Goals & Objectives

The goal of Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum (TAM) is to encourage youth involvement in aviation as an alternative to drugs, gang violence and other self-destructive activities. TAM has an interactive school visit program, an in-depth after school program, and an aviation museum. Our programs’ goal is to reduce the attrition rate of minority enrollment in aviation training, which is systemic nationwide. We are committed at TAM to preparing children to become the workforce of the future. Aviation history plays a great role in inspiring pilots of the future. TAM’s After School Program (ASP) is our new and exciting program that can help make this happen.

Needs Statement

As an urban school district, the Compton Unified School District (CUSD) shares many of the same concerns as other urban districts across the United States. To identify local problems, needs, and gaps in services, a series of meetings were held with representatives from community organizations, businesses, government, and TAM staff. Seven overarching local needs were identified. The deficiencies identified below are the catalyst for serious heath issues, and are common to many regions across the country:

1. Removal of barriers that create community isolation
2. Reduce the numbers of at-risk families that show increasing child abuse and neglect;
3. Reduce the risk of juvenile alcohol/ tobacco/ drug use
4. Reduce the numbers of students at-risk for academic failure
5. Increase per pupil expenditures
6. Significant numbers of students and families need English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services to fully participate in the educational and economic life of Los Angeles County
7. Improve access to health care for at-risk families.
